BK Athlete Riku in Japan: everyday life begins

The Boulderkeskus’ young star of the athlete team, Riku Sinivirta, moved to Japan at the end of August and now send us his first thoughts since the initial quarantine. You can read more about Riku as well as watch his interview here.

“It’s been about two months since I arrived in Japan and luckily I’ve managed to adapt to this country again. The temperature has been around 30°C for a long time, but last week the mercury in the thermometer dropped unexpectedly and autumn clearly took off. Last night I experienced the first earthquake in a long time. It was thankfully small and did not cause any damage in the area.

My days have been really simple: from morning to lunch I study and try to finish the day’s tasks so I have time to climb at the gym as soon as it opens at three o’clock.

I climb and work out at the gym for a maximum of three hours and hang out with my friends usually until seven – then it’s time to go home. Last month I did climb for more than three hours every day, except on Mondays when the gym was closed. Currently, the goal is to climb all the V7 graded problems at the gym. Hopefully in the near future I will also be able to climb outside and get my hands on something really difficult.

The funniest thing so far has been to feed people salmiakki (salty licorice) at the climbing gym. They call salmiakki a “ring” and only a few elders liked its flavor. Most people ate it with a really painful look or just swallowed the candy with the drink quickly. Unfortunately, some did not tolerate the taste at all and spat it straight out.”
