Newsletter from BK 25.3.

Hello, dear BK friends!

May brings all kinds of nice things: there are holidays such as May Day, Ascension day and Mother's Day, and of course outdoor climbing and also great indoor climbing with courses, training groups and competitions and such!

Now it's worth it to buy some climbing because for the rest of the month, the old prices are still valid!

When you buy a BK Collective membership aka the yearly membership or ten-year card now, you'll get even cheaper prices for as long as there's enough credit on the card and as long as you continue your membership! THE BEST THING IS that you can get the yearly membership now before May at the cheaper price and only start later in 2024!

BK Collective membership is 675€ and the 10x card 99€ until the end of April!

This means some changes to Flash's opening hours for the previous days as well: routesetting starts on Thursday, April 25. and continues on Friday as well. During these days, only the middle wall and the Valomotion game wall are in use.

On Saturday, the gym is open only for competitors until 16.00. Sorry for any inconvenience. Saturday evening and Sunday 28.4. BK Flash is open normally again!

The training group that climbs on Tuesdays in Pasila, with our coach David, will get to know outdoor climbing on the 14.5. and 28.5. Anyone interested in outdoor climbing: now is the time to join! If the weather looks rainy, the training group will train indoors in the warmth of Pasila as usual. Sign up by emailing or calling Pasila. When signing up let us know whether you prefer to come to the group at 17-19.00 or 19.00-21.00.

Ps. There will also be a special 6-week Training Group for the summer, where in addition to outdoor climbing, board climbing and much more! More information about this in the near future! Stay tuned!

New series: Climbing etiquette

There are many "unwritten rules" in climbing, and there are many types of climbers in the gyms. In order to make climbing as comfortable as possible for everyone, we decided to start a column in the newsletter where we go through (especially Boulderkeskus') climbing etiquette - of course, many instructions apply anywhere!

The first part works as a foundation - it is about the safe space principles that work as a basis for any sort of common instructions. Other parts are more climbing specific: about brushing, outdoor climbing and much more!

Brushing holds

Sometimes at the gym one has heard that brushing is only for climbers who climb harder grades or that it’s the job of the people working there. Of course, this is not true, but brushing is something everyone should do!

By brushing the holds, they stay cleaner and more usable for longer. Your project may also go easier when the excess rubber and chalk have been cleaned out of the way of friction. Brushing the fingerboards is also really advisable!

One unwritten rule reads as follows: the one who has brushed the holds has the next turn on the problem. This means that if someone at the gym or outside brushes the holds and goes to chalk up, you have to wait for your turn or at least ask first if it's okay to go or if the brusher is still going on the problem. Friendly climbers can also brush the holds for the next climber - of course then it's good to tell the fellow climber that it's okay to go despite the brushing, so that there are no misunderstandings.

When climbing outside, it is especially important to brush off the chalk and tick marks when you leave the rocks, so that the boulder remains in as clean a condition as possible! Please don't use excessive amounts of chalk so that the holds stay clean.
